If we put a game as featured on front page, the screenshot appears in Firefox, but not in IE (broken image icon)

I've looked at the source code and can't figure out what the problem is. The IMG SRC URL appears normal to me.

I checked Arcadeous.com and it's working there.

?!?

I figured it out. For some reason all your JPGs in /screenshots/ are saved as CMYK Progressive jpeg. IE does not like Progressive JPEG. So the solution is to re-save the images as Optimized JPEG. Also, CMYK is for printing things on paper. You should always use RGB mode for all graphics that are meant to appear on a website!

Well then can you tell me the cause and the fix?

Maybe you batch converted all the screenshots when you made your game packs? I will check by downloading images off your site. I'll let you know what format they are in.

The image you are using on your site, for "Rift" is a PNG.

Try this out: Open the /screenshots/ folder from one of your game packs. Drag ANY image from that folder into an open IE window.

Done, without a problem... tried more than 10 files in ie6 and ie7 (win xp) and in ie8 (win7).
I've also tried to save a test image in the progresive jpg format. All my IEs display it correctly.

The only "problem" I've found with that type of JPGs in IE browsers - they do not support progressive display of progressive JPEG. That means a file must be completely loaded to be shown.

On the other hand, you are not alone:
http://discussions.virtualdr.com/showthread.php?t=185909 Looks like it's system-specific issue.

To everyone: please note, games on mochimedia site (i.e. games that can be imported automatically) sometimes have screenshots in progressive JPG format too, so if you think this is important, convert them into simple JPG after importing.

well, if you need my opinion, here it is:
if a user still uses so old, unpatched browser, he (or she) most likely does not have and will not install a modern version of flash (which is required to run the best and freshes flash games.)

And of course, you can also check up your site's stats (even if you have not google analytics installed, your hosting CP must have 1-3 stat programs) - how many visitors are using IE6 to access your site. Just remember, not every IE6 has the problem mentioned in the previous posts, for example I tested my images on 5 PCs with IE6 (most of them are working on WIN XP) yesterday and all of them displayed the images without a problem. Conclusion?.. It's up to you.

I'm using IE 8, so I don't know what to tell you. Huh  Something must have corrupted the JPGs somehow in a way IE doesn't like.

Anyways, Frantisek, all you have to do is get the file(s) off your FTP, re-save it in Photoshop, or GIMP, or whatever, upload, and it will work again. Since usually there are only a few featured games (makes no sense to have hundreds of them as "featured") then its not a lot of work. You could also do a batch job in Photoshop to convert them all.

hey, here's a test. can you see this in your IE browser?
